The first Totley Health Walk was in early January 2004. Since then the group has grown and there are often upwards of 20 people on their walks. The meeting point is Totley Library on Baslow Road which is well served by buses. Walkers assemble on the grassy area outside the library from 10.15 onwards in time to start walking at 10.30am. 

 

On 17th January 2024 some of the walkers looked on whilst Duncan showed off the cake provided to help celebrate 20 years of walking from Totley Library. Duncan has supported this walk on a regular basis since it began. Sue (right foreground) was the responsible for starting this walk. Back in 2004 she was employed by Sheffield City Council as a Health Walks Project Ranger. She too continues to attend.

The experienced leaders on the Totley walk offer a wide choice of walks from week to week. Totley is very well situated for walking, with lots of greenspace around in every direction. Walkers can choose from a longer walk at a moderate to brisk pace or a shorter, flatter, walk at a gentle to steady pace.  The main walk lasts approximately one hour, the shorter walk may last less, particularly in chilly weather. The library staff make sure that walkers are welcome to socialise inside when they return from their walks. The community library is staffed by volunteers, and one of the ways they raise funds is to sell tea and coffee after the walk. 

Because of the hilly terrain in this area, the Totley Health Walk is unsuitable for wheelchairs. Assist dogs are welcome on this walk but for safety reasons leaders do not encourage other dogs.

  

Buses:    No 97 and 218. Alight at the stop after the Totley Rise Co-op shop (left hand side travelling from Sheffield centre) and walk back down the hill a short way to pick up the footpath to the library which is set back slightly from the road. The M17 bus also serves Totley library. This little bus operates a request stop service and its route passes close to the library.

Parking:   Street parking is usually available on Baslow Road. Please take care not to block resident's driveways on days when the library is particularly busy.

Toilets:      There is a toilet in the library which walkers may use on request.
