Step Out Sheffield is a volunteer‑led organisation providing free, friendly wellbeing walks across Sheffield. Our walks support people to improve their physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection through gentle, accessible walking in local parks and green spaces.

We offer short, led walks every weekday at locations across the city. Walks are open to adults of all ages and abilities, and no referral, booking, or specialist equipment is required. People can join at their own pace and attend as often—or as little—as they wish.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief that walking together, regularly and locally, can make a real difference to people’s lives.

We are governed by clear governance, policy and procedures which underpin all we do.

What We Do

  • Provide short, accessible wellbeing walks throughout Sheffield
  • Create welcoming, non‑judgemental spaces for people to get active
  • Reduce loneliness and social isolation
  • Support physical and mental wellbeing through gentle activity
  • Work collaboratively with health and social care professionals, community groups, and local partners

All walks are led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders, who focus on encouragement, inclusion, and enjoyment rather than speed or distance.

Our History

Step Out Sheffield has a long and proud history of supporting wellbeing through walking.

The very first health walk took place in Parson Cross Park in April 1999. From those early beginnings, the scheme grew steadily in response to local need, with more walks added across the city and a growing team of committed volunteers.

Over the years, Step Out Sheffield became part of the Ramblers Wellbeing Walks programme and has since grown into the largest Ramblers Wellbeing Walks scheme in the country that is managed and delivered entirely by volunteers.

In August 2024, Step Out Sheffield celebrated 25 years of health and wellbeing walks in Sheffield. To mark the milestone, volunteers and supporters took part in an anniversary walk from Endcliffe Park to the Botanical Gardens, followed by a celebration recognising the incredible contribution of volunteer walk leaders past and present.

Today, Step Out Sheffield continues to run walks year‑round, offering consistent, reliable support to thousands of people, while remaining rooted in the same principles that inspired that first walk in 1999: accessibility, kindness, community, and the power of simply getting outside together.

Our Volunteers

Our walks are made possible by a dedicated team of Volunteer Walk Leaders. They receive training and ongoing support and play a vital role in creating a friendly, safe, and inclusive environment for everyone who attends.

Without our volunteers, Step Out Sheffield simply wouldn’t exist.

Our Values

  • Inclusive – everyone is welcome
  • Supportive – encouragement over expectations
  • Community‑focused – local walks, local people
  • Volunteer‑powered – led with care and commitment
  • Accessible – free, regular, and easy to join
